Fondazione Nicola Del Roscio,<\/strong> in collaboration with the Mus\u00e9e Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech<\/strong> and the Mus\u00e9e Yves Saint Laurent Paris,<\/strong> presents the exhibition project En Sc\u00e8ne: Yves Saint Laurent.
\n1952\/1953 exhibition in 2023 <\/em><\/strong>, from Friday, December 6, 2024,<\/strong> through Friday, March 7<\/strong>, 2025, at the Foundation\u2019s exhibition space in Rome, curated by designer Stephan Janson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This extraordinary exhibition, which brings to Rome for the first time a selection of drawings and sketches of costumes and d\u00e9cors for the ballet, theater and music hall by the renowned fashion legend, Yves Saint Laurent (1936\u20132008), traces the designer\u2019s deep, lifelong passion for the entertainment world.<\/p>\n

The works presented are on loan from the vast collection of textiles, drawings, photographs and documents housed at the Mus\u00e9e Yves Saint Laurent Paris \/ Fondation Pierre Berg\u00e9 \u2013 Yves Saint Laurent, Paris.
\nSome sixty drawings are on display, representing models of sets and costumes dating from 1959, for the ballet Cyrano de Bergerac<\/em>, to 1978, the year Jean Cocteau’s play L’Aigle \u00e0 deux t\u00eates<\/em> was presented at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de l’Ath\u00e9n\u00e9e.
\nMusic hall is also illustrated by various sketches, including those for Le spectacle Zizi Jeanmaire<\/em>, which premiered at Rome’s Teatro Eliseo in November 1963. <\/p>\n

Yves Saint Laurent, who is universally recognized as one of the greatest fashion designers of the twentieth century, influenced generations of artists and left an indelible mark on international culture.
\nEven as a child, the future couturier greatly admired the theater and dreamed of joining the world of show business. <\/p>\n

In 1950 in Oran, his hometown in Algeria, the young Saint Laurent attended a performance of Moli\u00e8re\u2019s L’\u00e9cole des femmes<\/em> by Louis Jouvet (1887\u20131951) and his theatrical company.
\nIt was then that he discovered the magic of theater; he was fascinated by the enchanting costumes and sets designed by the painter Christian B\u00e9rard (1902\u20131949), who became a kind of idol for him. <\/p>\n

His education, along with discoveries and encounters over the years to come, steered him into the world of fashion, where he met Christian Dior\u2015his first and only employer\u2015who encouraged him to always remain curious, to go to the theater, see exhibitions and attend concerts.
\nWhile Dior immediately understood the young Saint Laurent\u2019s commercial talent, it was the choreographer Roland Petit who discovered his artistic potential for the entertainment world. He commissioned Yves Saint Laurent\u2019s first costumes\u2015for the ballet Cyrano de Bergerac <\/em>
\nin 1959\u2015and would remain a close friend of the couturier, helping him overcome his dismissal from the House of Dior in 1960 and supporting him when Yves Saint Laurent\u2019s own fashion house was launched in 1962.
\nOver the course of just two years, he entrusted the young couturier with the designing of costumes and d\u00e9cors for as many as eight ballets. <\/p>\n

Yves Saint Laurent\u2019s friendship with Roland Petit\u2019s wife, the famous ballet dancer Zizi Jeanmaire, resulted in myriad iconic creations, such as the Mon truc en plumes, a costume from 1961, which was recently paid homage to by Lady Gaga at the opening of the Paris Olympic Games.<\/p>\n

While Yves Saint Laurent\u2019s exceptional contribution to the world of fashion is well known, this exhibition of his work as a costume and set designer for the theater and ballet sheds new light on Yves Saint Laurent\u2019s genius while highlighting the couturier\u2019s deep undertanding, artistic talent and commitment to venues beyond the world of couture.
\nHis understanding of light, his sense of color, his unfailing line, movement and allure are elements that together compose perfect portraits of characters the master would dress time after time. <\/p>\n

While thousands of women have discovered the natural ease that his clothes convey, actors and dancers can also testify to the inherent strength of his costumes.
\nThe great Maya Mikhailovna Plisetskaya said that dancing in a Saint Laurent costume was an invaluable aid in getting into character.
\nCatherine Deneuve acknowledges how much Saint Laurent\u2019s costumes for Belle de jour<\/em> assisted her in getting perfectly in tune with her character, in part by smoothing out strained relations with the movie\u2019s director Luis Bu\u00f1uel. <\/p>\n

Whereas several of Petit\u2019s ballets have been performed at La Scala in Milan, and Italian theater companies\u2015such as the Piccolo in Milan and the Argentina in Rome\u2015have used his choreography, what we discover in this exhibition at the Nicola Del Roscio Foundation in Rome, the first dedicated to the great couturier in Italy, is a thorough presentation and delineation of a universe that was very dear to him, but that until today has remained unknown by the Italian public.<\/p>\n

The decision to hold this exhibition in Italy, the birthplace of the Commedia dell\u2019arte, is the best tribute that could be offered to a man who dedicated his entire existence to art, to his passions and to sharing them with the public.<\/p>\n

\nthe Cy Twombly, Morocco,
\n1952\/1953 exhibition in 2023 <\/em><\/strong> in partnership with the Cy Twombly Foundation and the Fondazione Nicola Del Roscio.
